A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic form of signature that authenticates digital documents and online transactions. It is the digital equivalent of a handwritten signature and is legally valid under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Types of Digital Signature Certificates

  • Class 1 DSC: For email communication - basic verification
  • Class 2 DSC: For company/individual identity verification - used for income tax, ROC filings
  • Class 3 DSC: Highest level - used for e-tendering, e-auctions, ICEGATE

How to Apply for DSC

  1. Choose a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) like eMudhra, Sify, NSDL
  2. Fill DSC application form
  3. Submit documents: PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, photograph
  4. Video verification call with CA representative
  5. DSC is issued on a USB cryptographic token within 1-2 days
  6. Install the DSC software and driver on your computer

DSC Validity

DSCs are typically valid for 1 or 2 years from date of issue. You can renew your DSC before expiry to avoid disruption in your work. Renewal requires fresh verification process.

DSC Fees

  • Class 2 DSC (1 year): Rs. 800 - Rs. 1,200
  • Class 3 DSC (1 year): Rs. 1,200 - Rs. 1,800
  • USB Token (one-time): Rs. 400 - Rs. 600
